Course Description

The modern practice of mental health occurs within an increasingly complex landscape shaped by digital technology, evolving professional roles, and heightened expectations around accessibility, transparency, and connection. For clinicians working in agency settings, decisions related to technology use, professional boundaries, and clinician self-disclosure are rarely isolated—and often intersect in ways that directly impact client care and the therapeutic relationship.

This workshop examines how New Jersey and federal laws, regulatory standards, and professional Codes of Ethics apply to the use of technology, clinician self-disclosure, and boundary management in contemporary mental health practice. Emphasis is placed on client-centered decision-making, protecting privacy and confidentiality, and maintaining clear therapeutic boundaries in both in-person and digital contexts. Participants will explore how electronic communication, telehealth platforms and online presence can blur traditional boundaries and increase the risk of intentional or inadvertent clinician self-disclosure.
